This study is an investigation into the possibilities for conception and realization of a fast bicycle lane connecting Binckhorst, urban transformation area with the center of The Hague. The aim of the study is to provide and compare a number of scenarios for the functional, spatial and qualitative integration of a bicycle lane into the complex development process of one of the city’s most ambitious urban regeneration plans. The study gives an insight into what different scenarios for the integration of the bike lane mean for the future spatial developments along its trajectory.

Future bike lane is an essential part of the connection between The Hague HS station and The Hague NOI station. It is also an important part of the regional and city bicycle network. It is a fast cycle route between Leiden and The Hague, parallel to the railway line. These so-called star cycle routes are essential for the envisaged mobility transition in The Hague and for increasing the share of bicycle use. Realizing this part of the cycle network is a complex task. First of all, there are barriers such as the highway, railway tracks, a canal and the city ring-road. Moreover, there is only limited space for extra (bicycle) infrastructure such as bicycle viaducts and ramps due to the existing buildings and main infrastructure. At the same time, the area around this part of the bicycle lane is in transformation, towards a mixed metropolitan residential, work and living area.
