Basic City A+U supervises urban planning and architecture aspects of the transformation of Het Nieuwe Rivium, a monofunctional office area in Capelle aan den IJssel.

Located at the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas and the Hollandse IJssel, The Rivium stood high on the lists of the largest office vacancies in the Netherlands for many years. At the same time, partly due to the crisis years, the development of new homes in Capelle aan den IJssel was at a standstill. Demand for quality homes has shown strong growth in recent years. The Rivium now has the opportunity to accommodate a high demand for housing in the short term. The ambition is to create a lively, accessible and sustainable living and working area that is well connected to the region. The transformation is a complex operation in the areas of property, environment, mobility, sustainability, urban development and architecture.

In order to guide and guarantee an integral quality of such an ambitious and complex endeavor, Municipality of Capelle aan den Ijssel has established a multidisciplinary team of experts from fields of architecture and urban planning, public space design, programming and infrastructure. Meeting on a regular basis, the team assesses the designs of the buildings and public space in multiple transformations that will run over a longer period of time. It ensures quality of every single project as such, its integration into a wider context and its contribution to the core ambition of the city.
