The railway line has always been a barrier between the inner city and the outer city of Vienna, dividing the city in two parts with different characters, morphology and life styles. Once an abandoned city zone without any apparent spatial quality turns today into an opportunity area. It reveals its latent potentials within a changed, far more complex development context. Our concept proposes how to both recognize the hidden treasures and articulate its contribution to Vienna.

The existing masterplan does not propose a solution to this problem. Actually it makes the spatial constellation even more problematic by introducing a street that segregates city’s urban fabric even more. Our concept is a reaction to this condition. Our hypothesis is that a carefully designed street can structure new relations between the two parts of the city. It could activate the ambient turning it into a vibrant urban space that generates synergies. As such, our proposal contributes to the fundamental reestablishment of the continuity of the city structure and reinvents the identity of once depreciated urban space.
