In an effort to contribute to paradigm shift from “Made in China” to “Created in China”, urban development framework aims at transforming 9km long Zhongguancun Street and surrounding city districts in the north-west part of Beijing into a world class destination of academic excellence and innovation. Spatially and functionally relating some of the most advanced academic and business institutes in China situated on the is essential for a such an ambition.
Downgrading the traffic significance of Zhongguancun Street was in the center of our approach. Street profile was transformed into a more green and pedestrian friendly environment, attractive for the adjacent existing program to orientate to. Street furniture, signage and lighting strategies further contribute to the establishment of a distinct character of the street. Two sides of the Zhongguancun Street become closer. What used to be perceived as a road, turns into a genuine city boulevard that binds the whole city district together.
Ambient of the boulevard is further strengthened by a sequence of four key urban development frameworks/projects, each one of them with its specific spatial and programmatic characteristics. The projects depict the potential for the future urban growth along the boulevard and additionally reinforce relation among the existing programmatic entities.
